Playing different scales, modes and the orientation on the fretboard is a major topic for all guitar players and from my point of view there are 2 ways to approach this problem.
    1. You can learn hunderts of patterns which you find in many pattern books you find on the market. Here you find a good collection of different patterns : https://www.guitar.ch/en/guitars/scales/scales.html
    2. You understand what is the essence of a scale, how it's built and how you derive from the basic pentatonic patterns to the major and minor scales and modes.
The file which you can download here helps you to go the 2nd way. The key is that most guitar players come the minor pentatonic pattern 1 + 4 and there you can start the journey.
Derive Minor & Major Scales from basic pentatonic positions
    1. Learn the positions 1 + 4 of the minor pentatonic and learn the intervals by heart - these are 1 b3 4 5 b7. The root note is marked red on the graphics.
    2. Learn the posistions 1 + 4 of the major pentatonics. The trick is - they are exactly the same patterns on the fretboard - you just need to move the pattern down 3 frets, redefine the root note ( marked red ) and learn the new intervals 1 2 3 5 6 by heart.
    3. Minor Scale - check the intervals. The new notes are marked red here : 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 b7. The grid of the pattern of the minor pentatonic remains - just add the 2 new notes.
    4. Major Scale - check the intervals. The new notes are marked red here : 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 The grid of the pattern of the minor pentatonic remains - just add the 2 new notes.
Additional 2 minor scales ( Harmonic & Melodic Minor )
    1. Harmonic Minor Scale - check the intervals and compare it with the minor scale. The new note compared with the minor scale is marked red. 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7
    2. Melodic Minor Scale - this one is not used often but good to know. It's a mix between minor and major scales. You can derive it either from the minor scale where you have to change 2 notes ( marked red ) 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7

    or from the major scale where you have to change 1 note ( marked red ) 1 2 b3 4 5 6 7

Here you find some ideas to make your alternative rock guitar song sound really special. I took the very very common progression with C / G / F / C G and made some really great sound versions of it. There is the main rhythm guitar which you can play with a slight distorted guitar which creates this deep alternative vibe and then add the other unusual chords to them. The backing track is drums, bass & the main guitar riff.

Here you find the tabs of the song " Tiderope " by Stevie Ray Vaughn. There are several versions available - I have taken the one from the studio album " In Step ". This can be different from live recordings which is quite normal for any blues artist. To get the original SRV sound you need to tune your guitar down to Eb.

I needed to write a professional but still intermediate rock guitar solo for a customer of mine. He wanted to have a solo of 16 bars for an arrangement in his orchestra. It's a solo over a Eb minor chord and I took really standard phrases since my student is an intermediate guitar player. The only real difficulty is the speed but this solo might give some ideas for you guys. There is an audio track added where you can here how it should sound.

This method alone is already quite sufficient to play a very tight and good rock guitar rhythm. There are 2 audio files attached. One is the backing track and one are the studies together with the backing track.

Here you find the tabs of 2 versions of a jazz blues in the key of Bb played with a walking bass. Version 1 is the easier one of the two but in order to be able to make some variations on your jazz guitar walking bass I recommend that you learn both versions. Walking bass jazz guitar is best played with finger picking but can also be played with a pick.

This is an advanced slow blues guitar arrangement in the key of G. Even the track is very slow is an avanced blues guitar task due to the nature of the slow speed, which requires a good timing and the mixture of lead guitar and blues guitar chords. But for sure it's also a great challenge for any intermediate blues guitar player. The backing track is only drum and bass to give you the full creative space on guitar.

Here you find some easy tabs for the Touch Technique, where you play the song by tapping the notes with both hands. This one is really a nice and easy starter on meditation guitar and the touch technique which was invented by Stanley Jordan. The audio which is added shows you how the tabs exactly sound. But you can play the song more freely in the tempo and also with the melody which is played with the right hand.

Here you find a great blues guitar exercise to learn to work with the form of any blues. This one is a bit an unusual form which shall engage you to really learn to count the bars during playing.
In the first part the regular form is played with a riff which you need to learn by heart and you need to learn whatever you play that this form always is also in your mind during playing. The 2nd part is a Play - Rest exercise. You improvise something with the E minor pentatonic for one bar and then you play the riff which comes at that spot of the form of this blues. It's easier when you first just learn the examples I wrote for you. The 3rd part is the opposite exercise with Rest - Play.
There is an  audio track of the tabs for you to help you to keep track on the entire exercise and the backing track is added too. It's only drum and bass so you really need to know in your mind where exactly in the form you are. Counting the bars helps at the beginning. The more you dive into the topic the more you should be able to feel where exactly you are in that blues form.

They represent the summary of most possible rhythm figures which might come across your way. Jazz guitar rhythm patterns are very often 2 bar patterns which altering on and off beat figures. All exercises have to be done with the foot on 2 & 4 if you really want to get those figures grooving. The audio files are the backing track + the audio of the tabs with metronom.

Here you find the tabs & the audio original file which I recorded for you of an open blues guitar tune of mine. It's really very simple to play from the technical part but to put in the feeling and the open time which is needed might take some practice. There is no timing on this tune - just think about telling a story with your guitar.
