This scale is related to the normal pentatonics since all notes of the pentatonics are part of the dorian mode. The pentatonics is 1 b3 4 5 b7 and the dorian mode is 1 2 b3 4 5 6 b7. As you can see there are only 2 additional notes which make the dorian mode. It's the 2 and the 6.
