  1. One of the most requested topics out of 30 years of teaching is the topic " how to gain speed on the guitar " in order to play fast runs. In this tutorial I will have a realistic and sustainable look on this topic. I will focus especially on the tasks which are needed on jazz and smooth jazz guitar playing techniques. So I will show you some exercises for patterns, modes in combination with ear training and theory. You can do all those tasks at the same time. This is the only possibility to save some time. 2. Here you can learn from the scratch how to work with a smooth jazz guitar tune in a major key. I'll take from the easy step by just using the major blues pentatonics till the complete analysis of each chord and using the modes and arpeggios. The key to a great smooth jazz guitar improvisation is to know it all and to be able to choose while you are playing. This tutorial is a " MUST HAVE " for all smooth jazz guitar fans. Here you can download the files associated to this tutorial :
  3. Jazz Guitar Secrets - Options One very important part of jazz guitar theory are the " options ". Every mode is built of 7 notes which are intervals. 4 notes of the mode ( the root, the 3rd, the 5th and the 7th ) are used to build a 7th chord and the remaining 3 notes are called the options. They are what make jazz guitar sound like jazz guitar, either you build chords with options or you use the options to solo on a specific mode. In this tutorial I introduce you to the options of the 7 basic modes : ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian and locrian and show you how to use the options on each mode in soloing. You can download the files attached to this tutorial here : To master this tutorial you need to know the basics of the modes : and it is really helpful to read the theory of modes, diatonic chords, intervals and options : If you have any questions please ask it in this post below or book a private online guitar lesson.

To fully understand the derivation of modes, related chords and options it is a must that you start to see scales and modes as a summary of intervals which have to be learnt by heart. You can skip this part of music theory if you are only into blues and basic rock guitar but if you want to learn how to create chord progressions from the diatonic modes, how chords are built and how to add options ( ex. Cmaj9, Dm11, G7#9 ) then you need to understand this part of music theory. On this working sheet I have added the essential parts of the theory. Take your time on it to learn and understand it. You need to manage the 7 basic modes - ionian, dorian, phrygian, lydian, mixolydian, aeolian and locrian completely in order to really start working with it in your creative playing. If you have any questions about these working sheets please ask them here :
