  2. Cool Jazz Guitar Cat ( Timing & Phrasing ) Playing a cool and solid jazz guitar does not necessarily have to do with speed and runs - it's also about timing, space and phrasing. Miles Davis was the master of time and space in his phrasing so let's have a look at a few easy tricks to get into jazz guitar phrasing by understanding the rhythm which is played. In this case I am showing how to play a blues track and you can use the minor F minor pentatonic or the F blues scale. Jazz blues is mostly in the key of F or Bb - in this case F. Pay close attention to my instructions how to work with timing and how to modify rhythm figures. By understanding rhythm figures you can also start to modify them. The 2 4 feel is the center of all exercises. Play all examples with the 2 4 feel that gives you the right groove and makes you swing correctly. 3. Here you can learn the concept of play and rest which Miles Davis created in his early recordings in jazz. This concept works for any instruments so also for jazz guitar. Miles Davis was a master of time and space in his improvisation concepts and here we analyze this concept of play and rest where are you keep improvisation lines going on by playing something then resting and then continuing the improvisation from where you rested. To put it into simple words you just play a phrase for one bar and then rest one bar then you continue to play one bar then you rest one bar. The more complex play rest concept works with playing one bar rest 2 bars or playing 2 bars rest 3 bars. An other important phrasing concept is to move the played motifs in the timing signatures. As an example you start the motive first on count one and when you repeated the second time you started on count 2 or count 1 + or any other timing signature which comes to your mind. In this tutorial I show you how to work with play rest 1 and 1 or 1 and 2. Also I move around the motives in the timing signatures as described. These are the easiest ways to start this concept but of course you can continue this and you really need to work on your timing I know you're feeling of space in music. The more you work on it the more you can really work this concept by intuition and then it starts to get more fluent. Also listen to recordings of Miles Davis to get a feeling of his way of phrasing and controlling time and space in jazz music. 6. I had a jazz vibe today in the studio so I switched on my guitar and played this improvised original in the vibe of one of my idols - Miles Davis with his CD " Birth of the cool " - It's a little homage to this great jazz artist. Without him I think jazz would not really exist. Here is the backing track which I created. You can give a try yourself ? jazzblues F 120.mp3
