Both songs were made famous when Nirvana did them during their unplugged recordings. The Meat Puppets recorded them first. Nirvana only played them live to lengthen their live unplugged set. Lead Belly recorded these songs back in the 30's. He also did versions of House of the Rising Sun and Black Betty as well as Gallows Pole and Good Night Irene. The one of Lead Belly I did not find. I agree I did not know that those old songs existed. BTW that acoutic guitar Cobain played on that MTV session was just sold for around 6M$ a few days ago.
